What is the Gospel?

We talk a lot about sharing the gospel at home and around the world. But what is the gospel, anyway?

The word “gospel” means “good news”.

So what is the good news? First, we have to start with the bad news.

BAD NEWS

From the time you were born, your relationship with God was broken by sin. Sin is anything that you think, say, or do that is in opposition to the holiness of God; and we have all sinned! We have all done things that are displeasing to God like lying, stealing, thinking bad thoughts about another person, or gossip. There is no one who is innocent.

Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.”

Sin has consequences. And the punishment for our sins is death. Not just physical death, but eternal death! And there is no amount of good deeds we can do to “win” favor with God or earn our way to heaven.

Romans 6:23, “For the penalty of sin is death…”

BUT...

“…the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

God loves us so much that he made a way — only one Way — to save us, forgive our sins, reconcile us to God, and secure an eternity for us with Him in heaven. And that is through His son, Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this; while we were still sinners Christ died for us.”

GOOD NEWS!

Jesus Christ died for us! He died for you! Jesus came to earth and paid the penalty of our sins by sacrificing himself on the cross and rose again 3 days later. Jesus’ resurrection proves that God accepted Jesus’ death as the payment for our sins.

John 3:16, “For God loved the world so much that He gave his one and only son. That whosoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.”

Because of Jesus’ death on your behalf, all you have to do is believe in Him, trusting that He died in your place for the payment of your sins — and you will be saved!

Romans 10:9, “if you confess with your mouth ‘Jesus is Lord’, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Romans 10:13, “for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Jesus died to pay the penalty for your sins and rescue you from eternal death. He lived the life you should live, and died the death you deserve to die. Salvation, the forgiveness of sins, is available to anyone who will trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

THE RESULT of SALVATION

Through Jesus Christ we can have peace with God.

Romans 5:1, “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Because of Jesus’ death on our behalf, we will never be condemned for our sins.

Romans 8:1, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Finally, we have this precious promise of God from Romans 8:38-39,

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This is the basic gospel message that the Bible teaches.

There’s lots of theology, different traditions and denominations, and different ways to present the gospel. But this is what is essential, and sharing this simple message is evangelism. If you believe this and have put your trust in Jesus, you can/should share the gospel and you can do it in this way. [Below are some tools to help!]

If today is the first time you have understood and believed this message, or if you have questions, please contact us and a staff member would love to talk to you and tell you more about how to accept salvation and begin a relationship with Jesus.
