A Widow's Hope

Nestled on the tiny island nation of Réunion, located east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, lives a widow named Ericka. Despite being a beautiful tropical paradise that thrives in producing sugar cane, guava trees, bananas, and citrus fruits, Ericka was grieving and in need of hope.

Ericka became a widow raising 3 children after her husband died as a result of an accident at his workplace at the sugar processing plant. Even though compensation was paid to her family, it did not sustain the needs to raise her precious children. In a country where Catholicism is dominant, Ericka said she prays every day using the rosary, asking God why He took away her husband.

Her friend, Ophelie, was praying for her and spoke a little about Jesus, but she did not seem very interested. Ophelie continued praying for her that one day she would see the light. During the course of a National-to-National (N2N) project, Ophelie who hosted a missionary in her home, invited her friend Ericka over for dinner, Together with the missionary, Ophelie began a conversation about Jesus. Ericka asked lots of questions, which eventually led to her to the understanding of salvation that she gladly accepted!

Though her situation did not change, now she is living with hope in the risen Savior who is our Provider and comforts us in our afflictions.
