The Last Supper Explained to an Artist
*Khaman, the father of a young Muslim family we visited, is a multi-talented artist whose painting of the Last Supper sparked a lively conversation about Jesus. When Khaman showed me a photo of the piece, I was pleased to see that it was a very Eastern depiction of the meal, with Jesus and the disciples reclined on cushions around a low table just like we did in every home that week (which I thought was probably more historically-accurate than the Rennaissance images we usually see). I was also shocked to find out that he didn't know anything about the meaning of the scene; a Christian friend had commissioned the painting, but he as the artist didn't know the characters or story!
I was thrilled to be the one to tell him about the significance of that Passover meal, what happened that night and over the following few days, and how Jesus as the master set aside his honor to take the lowest place of a servant and washed his disciples' feet. Khaman was captivated and blown away, often exclaiming, "Wow! Really? That is amazing!" as I shared the story.

As I spoke, and as I revealed each new detail, I realized how perfectly this story in particular conveys the gospel through his own culture. There are no accidents; God arranged this conversation and I just cannot believe I got the privilege of being the one to tell this creative the beautiful story behind his beautiful work of art and about the Creator who wove it.
Praise the Lord that 67 people made decisions for Christ during this week of evangelistic visits in a restricted-access Islamic country!
